Raising Awareness as a Community is a Big Step Toward the End of Violence
Women of Watts is a community organization that was founded in 2004 by Lydia Friend. Lydia is a community activist and long-time resident of Watts. In incorporating Women of Watts, Lydia sought to create an organization that would serve in multiple capacities, such as serving food, hosting holiday giveaways, mentoring, and advocating for change for the residents of the Watts community.
Women of Watts acts as an information center working with at-risk families – fathers, mothers, children and youth, especially for those who have lost a loved one as a result of gang violence.
The mission of Women of Watts is to strengthen and build the family structure, mentor and support families through raising awareness as a community to end violence. It is our hope that through our presence and support to eradicate violence that has been and still is destroying the lives of our community and families. We strive to empower the individuals of our community to take their lives back!
Women of Watts is most noted for its annual Marches. Every year, WOW hosts a “Stop the Violence March” in the streets of Watts. In addition to the annual Marches, we provide hot breakfast to elementary, middle and high school students every Monday,Wednesday, and Friday. We provide school materials and supplies, and work closely with recovery homes to assist individuals who are ready to make a change in their lives.
Women of Watts is dedicated to serving the Watts community and continues to hope for its progression toward positive behavior and attitude within the people who reside there.
Women of Watts first march against violence was held this year in June.
